This is the largest community in Kenya. They are located in the central part of the country around the Mt. Kenya region. They are Bantu speakers. According to their oral traditions, the founder of the tribe was a man called Gikuyu. He and his wife Mumbi were instructed by God "Ngai" to start a family as they visited him on top of Mt. Kenya where they believed He lived. Together, they got nine daughters who were the basis for the nine Kikuyu clans. These are the Achera, Agachiku, Airimu, Ambui, Angare, Anjiru, Angui, Aithaga, and Aitherandu.
