Hemingway in Cuba: His arrival and Love for the Island

Hemingway loved the nature of the island as well, especially the nature surrounding the sea and the nearby keys. In the articles and books he would write during that period he described with admirable perfection the coralline bottom of the sea, the virgin beaches, and the hard work that the humble fishermen passed through day to day; fishermen he helped out so much. In 1933 his second wife, Paulina, was involved in a street shooting and Ernest decided to go away for some time. They decided to go to Santander, Spain and when departing he said to his friends that he hoped that the days of that "miserable tyrant Machado" were over soon.Ò  During the trip he found out by the radio that Machado had been defeated by a popular revolution. A part of that experience was expressed in his novel "Have and Have Not".

In 1939, married to Marta Gellhorn, he began to think of having his permanent residence in Cuba. Marta was not very fond of the bohemian life they were living in the Ambos Mundos Hotel and she found the VigÓa Farmhouse (in San Francisco de Paula, 9 miles away from Havana City) while looking for a rental. At the very beginning Hemingway did not want to move out, but after the reconstruction and arrangements his wife made, he decided to move in and a year later he became the owner of the estate. In the quietness of his new home, the author wrote his most fascinating novels: "The Old Man and the Sea" and "For Whom the Bells Toll".

The VigÓa Farmhouse is a three-story building, very spacious and illuminated, surrounded by a exuberant and fresh garden, full of palm trees, 18 varieties of mango trees and a huge ceiba. In the first story of the building there was a room that housed more than 50 cats (some of which are buried in the garden with tombstones). The decoration of the house was bungalow-like, having a great number of the trophies he earned during his safaris in Africa and a very important library that housed more than 8 thousand books. Nowadays, the VigÓa Farmhouse (donated by his last wife Mary Welsh) receives a large amount of visitors who can see the rooms with the original furniture and personal belongings of Hemingway much as he left them when he departed for good from the island, in 1960.

"celebrity-spotting": a Holiday, not a Hobby

The evolving face of travel in the 21st century has seen the traditional package holiday take a backseat in the hearts and minds of holiday-goers. Instead, it has given way to the concept of the "themed vacation" - from Aztec tours in Central America to Lord of the Rings themed trips to New Zealand. But, in today"s celebrity-obsessed world, one themed break is rising quickly through the ranks: the idea of the "celebrity-spotting" getaway.

Patong Beach Life-the Seas and the Sands

Patong the Beach with healing powers Walking along the squeaky white sands of Patong beach, I realized how therapeutic the sea and the sands are. Those distinctive sounds of waves crashing in a cascading manner and the sounds of gulls flying over head, make us feel how lucky we are. What I tried to understand here is the reason why the beach is so enthralling to us. Then it came to me; the sound of the sea is not just any sound. Itò€™s not like the whispering trees of a forest or the sound of birds singing to a background of tottling water from a small bamboo flute, often found in Japanese gardens. No, the sea and the sand are much more powerful. It is the volume of noise coming from the sea and sea winds that takes over you mind and soul. Once you are there, you are possessed and filled with these sounds to the existence of nothing else. This is the one main reason why beach life is so wonderfully soul reviving-all your troubles are cleared by the winds. Your thoughts are cleansed by the sounds and worries are laid to rest. What else does the sea do for you? Have you noticed how tired you feel after being by the sea? The sea sleep you can get from the sea sounds is one of a perfect dream and one that cannot be simulated anywhere. Whilst on the beach, pick up a largish shell from the sand, put this to your ear to hear a recording of the sea. Keep this shell as a souvenir and use it to relieve your stresses when you are home. Pick up some sand in your hands and massage it into your palms, then walk to seas edge and slowly wade in up to your middle. If you have any skin problems, a cut or pimples or eczma for example, bath these areas with this amazing mineral rich sea water. You may feel some discomfort at first, but after a minute the smarting pain will subside and within a few days you will see the difference. This of course, doesnò€™t only apply to Patong beach or Karon and its sea in Thailand. It is the same case for any sea in the world. People call it the healing sea and those who live with it and abide to it have a healthier existence and a much happier longer life. Similarly, hotels near the beach and sea can also offer that chance for guests to relax and wind down. A room with a sea-view for example, can allow guests to listen to the flowing rhythmic sea whilst breathing in the healing sea air at night. Horizon Patong Beach Resort Spa and hotel for example, combine the natural beauty of sea, sand and lush vegetation with excellent service and accommodation. Situated nearby the idyllic Patong west-coast beach and nestled between havens of botanical gardens, the resort offers a harmonious setting of peace and tranquility. Perfect for those who crave relaxation whilst at the same time want to enjoy the delights of everyday tourism and shopping.
