When You book a guided tour in Florence Tours in Florence - Tuscany, with us You"ll realize  how beautiful and magic this town is.Piazza della Signoria, is the central square of Florence, home of the civil power with Palazzo Vecchio and the heart of the city"s social life. L-shaped, is located in the central part of medieval Florence, south of the Duomo and a few dozen meters from the Ponte Vecchio and Arno. Thanks to the archeological findings from 1974, it could be established that the first activities in the square date back to Neolithic times and that the present square was an important area of the Roman city. The central element of the square is the fourteenth century Palazzo Vecchio, built between 1299 and 1314 to give a decent home to the Priors of the Arts, representatives of professional associations that since 1282 held the city government and who used to reside at the Bargello. The architectural design is reported to Arnolfo di Cambio who in the late thirteenth century is engaged in the most important sites of Florence: the Duomo, Santa Croce and the new ring of walls.
The Loggia della Signoria, also called the Loggia dei Lanzi or Loggia dell"Orcagna (because of an erroneous attribution to brother of the architect designer), was built between 1376 and 1381 by Benci di Cione, with the function of the balcony to harangue the crowd during the official ceremonies. During the sixteenth century the lodge lost its original function to become a sort of open-air museum of sculptures from the Medici collection. In 1555 Cosimo I in fact poses the Perseus by Cellini and in 1585 Francis I placed the Rape of the Sabine Women by Giambologna.
